Root Canal therapy is sometimes necessary if the pulp of a tooth is diseased or injured, and unable to repair itself, it loses its vitality. The pulp is the soft tissue that contains the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue of a tooth. The most common causes of pulp death are a deep cavity, a crack or traumatic injury to the tooth, which allow bacteria and their products to leak into the pulp.
Root canal treatment involves removal of the tooth's pulp, a
small thread-like tissue that is important for tooth
development. If the injured or diseased pulp is not removed, the
tissues surrounding the root can be infected and an abscess can
form resulting in pain, swelling and destruction of the
supporting structures around the tooth, possibly leading to loss
of one or more teeth. The tooth's canals are cleaned, shaped and
filled. Once completed, the tooth requires a permanent filling
or a crown. Sometimes after a root canal is completed, a post is
placed in the root of the tooth to give support and strength.
Crowns are needed when a large portion of a tooth is broken off, it is replaced with a crown. Crowns can be made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or all metal. Crowns usually involve two dental visits. At the first visit, the tooth is prepped for the crown, an impression is made and a temporary crown is placed on the tooth. About two and one half weeks later, at the second, delivery visit, the permanent crown is cemented.
Bridges are a permanent replacement for a missing tooth that involves crowning the teeth on either side of the missing tooth and replacing the missing tooth. This procedure also requires two visits
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are custom made to fit over your teeth. They can close spaces between teeth and cover stained or discolored teeth. They can also be made to change the shape or length of your teeth. A thin layer of enamel is removed from the tooth and an impression is taken to be sent to the lab. Then the inside of the veneer is etched then bonded to the tooth with aid of a bonding light.
Tooth Whitening is a bleaching process that lightens discolored enamel. A whitening gel is placed in a thin bleaching tray that fits over your teeth. The tray is then worn for specified amount of time each day or evening until the optimum lightening is achieved. Whitening can also be achieved in the dental office with one visit.
